Today, during the plenary of the Senate, six bills scaled through the first reading while three others were passed for the second reading.

A bill for an Act to establish the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation to coordinate and promote drug awareness, prevent substance abuse and facilitate the rehabilitation of drug users and related matters,

sponsored by Senator Rufa’i Sani Hanga (Kano Central) and a bill for an Act to establish Nigeria Coast Guard to secure and protect the maritime zones of the country, sponsored by Senator Sanni Wasiu Eshilokun (Lagos Central), were among the bills that were passed for second reading.

Divergent views trailed the two bills given, the importance of the issues to national development. They were referred to relevant committees for further legislative actions.

In my summation, I commended the sponsors of the bills and all the senators who contributed to the debate. It shows their collective passion to deal with the challenges facing our country.

Meanwhile, we condemned the ill-treatment of the Super Eagles in Libya following a motion under Personal Explanation by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Sulaiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila (Kano South).

What happened to the Super Eagles in Libya is not in tandem with the spirit of sports. The essence of sports is to promote unity and competition and enhance brotherhood among the countries on the continent. The way our players are treated is terrible and condemnable.

To this effect, we called on the Libyan ambassador and the authorities to apologise for the ill-treatment of our national team. Nigeria is a big country in Africa. We always lead in terms of diplomacy, friendship and everything.
