Today, during our plenary at the Senate,I emphasised the need for the establishment of the Federal College of Education (Special) Karaye, Kano State, following the consideration of a bill to that effect sponsored by Sen. Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila (Kano South).

After commending Senator Kawu for sponsoring the bill, I told the Senate that establishing the institution in Karaye in the northern part of the country is necessary to educate disabled persons and, by extension, address the challenge of street begging.

Similarly, I threw my weight behind the quest to establish the Federal University of Education (Special), Oyo, sponsored by Senator Yunus Abiodun Akintunde (Oyo Central). Let me emphasise that we need to make our education system all-inclusive.

It should be all-inclusive to include everyone; there shouldn’t be discrimination. We must adequately prepare for these teachers who will teach disabled students. And how do we get to do that? It is through this kind of institution.

The school is not for people with disabilities alone but for everybody. That is the misconception. It is for everyone—anyone who wants to take teaching people with disabilities in schools as a profession. Anyone can go there; disabled people can go there to learn how to do sign writing, sign language, and whatever. Then, that person will go on to teach people with disabilities.
