During our today’s plenary at the Senate, six bills passed the first reading, while three others scaled the second reading. These efforts are part of our commitment to provide essential legislation to address our beloved country’s challenges.
In summarising the debate on the Bill aimed at amending the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act, Cap. A12, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, which seeks to establish the Federal College of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry in Tillase, Gombe State, I emphasised the critical need to enhance our agricultural sector to achieve food security.
Several speakers echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of ongoing training for individuals engaged in agriculture, as it is the backbone of our economy.
Training must focus on modern agricultural practices, as we can no longer rely on outdated subsistence farming methods. Institutions such as the proposed college will play a vital role in developing the necessary workforce for our agricultural sector.
Similarly, in my remarks on a Bill for an Act to establish factoring assignments act to provide for principles and to adopt rules relating to the assignment of receivables to create certainty and transparency and to promote the modernisation of the law relating to assignments whilst protecting existing assignment practices and facilitating the development of new practices and ensuring adequate protection for the interests of debtors to promote the availability of capital and credit and to facilitate domestic and international trade and for related matters, sponsored by Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru (Lagos East), these groups of entities are the backbone of every up and doing economy; thus we need to support this bill.
While commending Senator Abiru, I noted his exploit in the banking sector; he is always upright in coming up with bills that help stimulate our economy.
I expressed optimism that the bill when passed into law, will help provide necessary working capital and make businesses easier for small and medium-scale enterprises in this country.
